Description

Malagueta is a small, tapered pepper of about 3 – 5 cm in length. It’s the national pepper of Brazil and a semi wild relative to Tabasco. Malagueta has a long history. The first Europeans to come across this variety were Christopher Columbus’ crew members, who came ashore in the Caribbean in 1492. The local inhabitants already used Malagueta for generations as food, natural dye and medicine. Today, Malagueta is used in a wide range of dishes. African Bird’s Eye is believed to be a variety derived from Malagueta.
