Description
Thunder Mountain Longhorn is a very long chili pepper originating from China. On average they grow to about 20-30 cm in length but under ideal conditions they can even reach up to 50 cm with a diameter of less than a centimeter!
The Thunder Mountain Longhorn chili pepper originates from the region around Mount Leigongshan, or Thunder Mountain, in Guizhou province in southwest China. This mountain is located in a remote, mountainous area known for its rich biodiversity and traditional agricultural practices, including the cultivation of unique crops like the Thunder Mountain Longhorn.
According to local folklore, the "God of Thunder" was said to reside on the mountain. In summer thunderstorms are frequently heard echoing through the mountains. So this pepper is named after this mountain and the addition Longhorn was probably added in the US. Longhorn is a breed of cattle that, as the name suggests, has very long horns.
Guizhou is known for its spicy cuisine and the local population values this chili pepper for its heat which adds flavour without overwhelming the taste buds. A common use is to dry and grind the Thunder Mountain Longhorn into chili flakes or powder. This dried product is used as a topping for noodle dishes, stews and soups.
